Fluorescence
Fluorescence is the emission of light that has been triggered by the absorption of a different photon (usually of shorter wavelength). The timescale for fluorescence can be very quick (nanoseconds), or very long (hours). Long lifetime excited states are usually caused by phosphorescence, a type of fluorescence whose timescale is dependent on forbidden quantum transitions.
