OK, I’m sure that we are all familiar with the fact that most religious adherents, especially of the fundamentalist Christian cultivar, believe evolution to be some invented lie of the evil atheists, and those that argue its virtues as a scientific theory backed by 150 years of biological, chemical, and geological fact shall be condemned to an eternity of fire. And these types also tend to believe that the Holy Bible is the word of God, unadulterated from inception, blah blah blah…<\/p>\n

OK.<\/p>\n

But how many of them have actually read the Bible? I’m sure that most would say they have, and perhaps even have memorized it. Then let’s draw some attention to Genesis 1:29: “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” According to God, he created all plants as food for people. How then do we today have non-edible varieties? Like, say, nightshade, or oleander? Clearly evolution<\/em> could not have created them…just how did they come to be?<\/p>\n

And look at the next line: “And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.” Evidently all animals are herbivores, too. Now, there could be a few answers to this:<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>

  1. Carnivores (and poisonous plants, etc.) were created by God after the first week. I don’t think the Bible mentions this anywhere, though perhaps a vengeful God would make the world all the worse after the expulsion from the garden.<\/li>\n
  2. Carnivores evolved later on. Creationists give a resounding NO.<\/li>\n
  3. Some herbivores switched to meat. Given the complexity of digestive processes and anatomy, I think this would fall under “evolution”.<\/li>\n
  4. God actually DID create carnivores and poisonous plants and parasites, but decided not to tell us. That would be very mean, and I bet He would have felt bad if Adam ate a toadstool and died from liver failure.<\/li>\n
  5. “Green herb” is code for meat. Doubtful.<\/li>\n
  6. Carnivory has been around since the Cambrian, or earlier. I think that fits best.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    And you know what? It looks like Genesis might even propose evolution right from the start.
